Luke - Stranger

Stranger

Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

Two of the men that were disciples of Jesus who heard the testimony of Mary Magdalene, were walking on a road and were talking. I like to walk and think on the things of the day and of the Lord. They were trying to understand what happened in recent days.

Luke 24:14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
Luke 24:15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

He came along side of them. When I walk I feel the presence of the Lord walking with me. He drew near, eggizo, to bring near, to join one thing to another.

We have his presence, the Comforter, the parakletos, (Holy Ghost) the one who goes along side. definitions: summoned, called to one's side, esp. called to one's aid. One who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an advocate. This is Jesus with us, to help us, to be our advocate before the Father. The one who helps us learn of God.

Luke 24:16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

They, as we are at times, were too focused on the problem to acknowledge Jesus in their midst. They did not see him.

Luke 24:17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

Jesus, wanted to be involved in their thoughts and concerns, and in ours.

Luke 24:18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

Cleopas? This name is mentioned only in this one verse. He said, "You must be a stranger, if you do not know what has happened." Cleopas could not see that this was Jesus, which is unusual. Jesus was asking them to give a witness of the events that he was very much aware of. Was he smiling at their lack of faith or was he concerned? Some complain but do not want to listen. They have the attention of the master. Speak your thoughts, get to know this stranger who walks with you. He is your friend, he knows more than you think.
