Scripture says that mankind was created in God's image, but God is not of the flesh, therefore, they must mean intellectually -- not by our looks and if you're so smart, earth can also mean soiled land (other planets). We are what we are because we create and improve upon ourselves.

We were created as spiritual beings...must worship God in Spirit and in truth
We were created to love
We were created with language and reason
We are creative
Jesus restored us in His image, the second person of the Trinity, we are made eternal spirit beings; this is the image of God, which was created to worship God, not self or another man or idol.
