Ragman story (sent from Daisy)

Scripture: Revelation 7:17
“For the Lamb who stands in front of the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to the springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away all their tears”

I saw a strange sight. I stumbled upon a story most strange, like nothing my life, my street sense, my sly tongue had ever prepared me for.

Hush, child. Hush, now, and I will tell it to you. Even before the dawn one Friday morning I noticed a young man, handsome and strong, walking the alleys of our City. He was pulling an old cart filled with clothes both bright and new, and he was calling in a clear, tenor voice: "Rags!"

(Ah, the air was foul and the first light filth to be crossed by such sweet music.)  "Rags! New rags for old! I take your tired rags! Rags!" "Now, this is a wonder," I thought to myself, for the man stood six-feet-four, and his arms were like tree limbs, hard and muscular, and his eyes flashed intelligence.

Could he find no better job than this, to be a ragman in the inner city? I followed him. My curiosity drove me. And I wasn't disappointed.

Soon the Ragman saw a woman sitting on her back porch. She was sobbing into a handkerchief, sighing, and shedding a thousand tears. Her knees and elbows made a sad X. Her shoulders shook. Her heart was breaking. The Ragman stopped his cart. Quietly, he walked to the woman, stepping round tin cans, dead toys, and Pampers.

“Give me your rag," he said so gently, "and I’ll give you another." He slipped the handkerchief from her eyes. She looked up, and he laid across her palm a linen cloth so clean and new that it shined. She blinked from the gift to the giver.

Then, as he began to pull his cart again, the Ragman did a strange thing: he put her stained handkerchief to his own face; and then HE began to weep, to sob as grievously as she had done, his shoulders shaking. Yet she was left without a tear.

“This IS a wonder," I breathed to myself, and I followed the sobbing Ragman like a child who cannot turn away from mystery. "Rags! Rags! New rags for old!"
Scripture: Luke 1:51a
“His mighty arm does tremendous things” NLT

In a little while, when the sky showed gray behind the rooftops and I could see the shredded curtains hanging out black windows, the Ragman came upon a girl whose head was wrapped in a bandage, whose eyes were empty. Blood soaked her bandage. A single line of blood ran down her cheek.

Now the tall Ragman lookedupon this child with pity, and he drew a lovely yellow bonnet from his cart. "Give me your rag," he said, tracing his own line on her cheek, "and I'll give you mine."

The child could only gaze at him while he loosened the bandage, removed it, and tied it to his own head. The bonnet he set on hers. And I gasped at what I saw: for with the bandage went the wound! Against his brow it ran a darker, more substantial blood - his own! "Rags! Rags! I take old rags!" cried the sobbing, bleeding, strong, intelligent Ragman.

The sun hurt both the sky, now, and my eyes; the Ragman seemed more and more to hurry. "Are you going to work?" He asked a man who leaned against a telephone pole. The man shook his head -- The Ragman pressed him: "Do you have a job?" "Are you crazy?" sneered the other. He pulled away from the pole, revealing the right sleeve of his jacket - flat, the cuff stuffed into the pocket. He had no arm.

“So," said the Ragman. "Give me your jacket, and I'll give you mine." Such quiet authority in his voice! The one-armed man took off his jacket. So did the Ragman - and I trembled at what I saw: for the Ragman's arm stayed in its sleeve, and when the other put it on he had two good arms, thick as tree limbs; but the Ragman had only one. "Go to work," he said.

After that he found a drunk, lying unconscious beneath an army blanket, an old man, hunched, wizened, and sick. He took that blanket and wrapped it round himself, but for the drunk he left new clothes.   And now I had to run to keep up with the Ragman. Though he was weeping uncontrollably, and bleeding freely at the forehead, pulling his cart with one arm, stumbling for drunkenness, falling again and again, exhausted, old, old, and sick, yet he went with terrible speed. On spider's legs he skittered through the alleys of the City, this mile and the next, until he came to its limits, and then he rushed beyond.
Scripture: Colossians 3:12a
“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you” MSG

I wept to see the change in this man. I hurt to see his sorrow. And yet I needed to see where he was going in such haste, perhaps to know what drove him so.

The little old Ragman - he came to a landfill. He came to the garbage pits. And then I wanted to help him in what he did, but I hung back, hiding. He climbed a hill. With tormented labor he cleared a little space on that hill. Then he sighed. He lay down. He pillowed his head on a handkerchief and a jacket. He covered his bones with an army blanket. And he died.

Oh, how I cried to witness that death! I slumped in a junked car and wailed and mourned as one who has no hope - because I had come to love the Ragman. Every other face had faded in the wonder of this man, and I cherished him; but he died. I sobbed myself to sleep.

I did not know - how could I know? - that I slept through Friday night and Saturday and its night, too. But then, on Sunday morning, I was wakened by a violence. Light - pure, hard, demanding light - slammed against my sour face, and I blinked, and I looked, and I saw the last and the first wonder of all.

There was the Ragman, folding the blanket most carefully, a scar on his forehead, but alive! And, besides that, healthy! There was no sign of sorrow nor of age, and all the rags that he had gathered shined for cleanliness.

Well, then I lowered my head and trembling for all that I had seen, I myself walked up to the Ragman. I told him my name with shame, for I was a sorry figure next to him. Then I took off my clothes in that place, and I said to him with dear yearning in my voice: "Dress me."

He dressed me. My Lord, he put new rags on me, and I am a wonder beside  him. The Ragman, the Ragman, THE CHRIST.

Re: Ragman story

Thanks Daisy. Yes, I had heard this story of the Ragman and it really is a blessing, even if somehow my name could be connected to the Christ. In a way this is a confirmation to my strange name which I received as a child before I heard of this story. It is certainly a story for us all to try to be like. As a young man I was strong and yes 6' 4", but cancer put an end to self glory. Perhaps affliction makes us aware of others needs? Even when the Lord came to me in the hospital I became a witness for God. Not knowing anything about Him, other than he touched me and gave me peace and a desire to serve him.

Life leaves many scars, afflictions, devine healing; triumph, and defeat as we put our love on someone else and lose that love and through many tears and struggles we find our way back to the foot of the cross. With new purpose we take his white linens, pick up the rod of His word and began a new walk in His steps never to look back. The journey from the cross at last has given me hope and the witness of his word for myself and others. As we go we find many who have been bloodied and with such needs that only the Lord Jesus Christ can bring new life to; the white linens replace the blood and tears with peace and joy.   Gary

 Isa 61:1  The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
Isa 61:2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Isa 61:3  To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

Luke-Don't let him pass you by

Luke 9:51  And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

It was nearing the time of the final Passover, Jesus was doing things that needed to be done before he would go to the cross for our sins and be received up to heaven with the Father. He fixed his face towards Jerusalem. Be assured this weighed heavy on his human mind. Important and difficult things do cause us to ponder and be prepared in our minds and hearts.

Luke 9:52  And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

The Jews hated the Samaritans and normally would go around their land. Jesus had no hate, he would cut through Samaria as he did when he met the woman at the well.

 John 4:4  And he must needs go through Samaria.

 Every place Jesus went had opportunities for ministry, this is true for us as well. Remember the great commission:

Mat 28:19  Go ye therefore, (as you go) and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

 Jesus sent messengers ahead to prepare the Samaritans to meet Jesus. They were sent bearing good news.The work of the apostles was to go as ambassadors to introduce Jesus to others.

Luke 9:53  And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

 Interesting, his focus and attention seemed to be elsewhere, on the difficult time ahead, so he seemed to be not coming to them, but just passing through. Jesus was perfect, but we are not. If we expect people to want to hear us, we must be prepared and enthusiastic. Jesus could have blessed these people with eternal life, but they thought he was going to others. How many feel that they are unworthy to receive Jesus? How many cannot see that he loves them? That he came to die for them to secure eternal life for them? Do not think that Jesus did not come for you. Do not let him pass by without being touched by him.

 Luke 19:10  For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

He came for me and he came for you, don't let him go by without making you whole. He is healer and life giver. In Jesus is eternal life and the forgiveness of all sins. He came to them and he comes to you, because he loves you with all of his heart. Reach out and receive him.

Luke-Who is for us?

Luke 9:49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
Luke 9:50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

This is an exception, to other scriptures on the subject. God always shows us something new. Who can know the mind of God? A scripture that supports this verse is:

Mat 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Mat 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

But there are other scriptures that do not agree with this.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

What is different in this passage? Many claimed to prophesy, cast out devils in Jesus name and to do wonderful works, BUT, Jesus knew their hearts. They were phonies, not truly of God, but pretenders. Jesus examined their works, they did not do the will of the Father. They were doing things on their own, claiming to hear from the Father, claiming to do great things from the Father, it was all smoke, worthless. Why? Jesus said, "I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Religious things and games, from their own wicked hearts. They had not bothered to come to Jesus and to hear from the Father. They were lying, children of the devil, perhaps self deceived.

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Jer 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Our Holy Spirit discernment is needed. The real Holy Spirit, from receiving Jesus as Lord and savior; not eyes glazed, emotional pretense. You may fool the people, but not the Lord.

2 Pet 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 Pet 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2 Pet 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Are you fooled by those who wish to make merchandise of you for their own gain? Truly be careful. If they prophesy, is it of God, from his word? Are they really casting out devils and doing wonders? I wonder? Examine all their fruit, not just what they claim. Do they have the fruit of the Spirit?

Getting back to our scriptures from Luke. They may not be with us, maybe in another denomination, but doing the Lord's work. If they are for Jesus, praise God and offer them your fellowship. If they are of another spirit, rebuke them in love and withdraw from them.

Demons? fallen angels

Angels and demons are created beings. There is only One Being who was not created....is God Himself. Angels were originally created holy and without sin, but...there was a rebellion by Satan, who, being lifted up by his own beauty, sought to exalt himself above God and rebelled. In his rebellion, he took with him one-third of the angels (Rev. 12:4). This rebellion and fall is probably described for us in Isaiah 14:12-14 .     In Gen. 3 It says...now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field. Consider...that If the angels who were in the presence of God for who knows how long...Could be duped by Satan or could not resist him...mankind can be fooled as well. Satan is more clever, deceitful, and shrewd than any man or woman in history. (SC) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If we do not believe there are fallen angels, then why not believe in extra terrestrials, flying saucers  etc. ? I see fallen angels. They come in different sizes and shapes. They have various levels of authority. Yes, they are smarter than humans. Many people say they (hear) from god, and do not like the Bible. These are spirits, angel guides. We do not become infatuated with angels, fairies...The lore we enjoy, just may be fallen angels, devils. They are clever, we can't debate with them apart from God's word. We should not try. Usually those with angel wisdom say, do not quote a book, use your own mind...then they have won the debate. We never stop quoting God's word. Jesus did this against satan, the highest ranking devil, so must we...

Response to "who is greatest"

  Another God Blessed study Elder Gary.... Thank U.... Adrian ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who is greatest?
Easy answer........................GOD.....................  :)

If only I had more money, more possessions, then I would command respect?

================================= The heck with having more stuff and respect, I just want to get by and live in a place I can call being my own........
Jesus is with the innocent and the weak, the trusting children.

:)  (GL) \~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here is a story that helped me understand how God can use special needs people.  Also an inspiring woman, Johnny Erickson Tada put in perspective how we can treat people with disabilities. She recently quoted this passage in regards to the precious woman (Terry) whom our society let starve to death.   Proverbs 31:8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Speak up and judge fairly;defend the rights of the poor and needy."   God blessed me richly by letting me have a special needs brother.  He was born with cerebral palsy and I got to see God's glory minister through my mother's love and care for him.  He went to be with the Lord last Friday and we are rejoicing that he was part of our lives and is now completely whole.   It is coincindental that this is the very passage that the Lord had ministered to me when working through my initial grief.  My brother has a special place with the Lord.  His mind remained as a child even though he was 41 years old!   NOT A COINCIDENCE AT ALL OF COURSE.  As Pastor Arlon says "He gives us handfuls on purpose".  I am truly blessed and to God be the glory!  Thank you Gary for being used in this way.  As I have said before, your ministry comes just in time more often than you know.  Better that one hand doesn't know what the other is doing sometimes.    Blessings to all, Debbie

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You have stated two very powerful statements that Jesus made. The first is the way we treat little children reveals the way we treat Jesus Himself. We cannot mistreat or abuse little children without abusing Jesus Christ. If we love the little ones we are also loving Jesus Christ.
The second statement concerns the way we respond to believers who are in need.
If we close our minds to those who are needy, we are closing our minds to Jesus Himself. "In as much as you have done it unto one of the least of these my children you have done it unto me." We are to be very concerned for those in His family who are in need, and help them to the best of our ability. In so doing we are serving Jesus Christ.
Luke-Who is greatest?
  Luke 9:46  Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
 Isn't this the thinking of the world? If I can only rise to the top of my profession, to be respected of all. If only I had more money, more possessions, then I would command respect? If only I was more thin or fat, then I would look better and people would notice me? Perhaps I would be loved? What things in your mind hold you captive? What are you wishing to achieve to make you more loved and respected by people? Hear God, and put away these things.
1 Cor 3:19  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
1 Cor 3:20  And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
Luke 9:47  And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
Luke 9:48  And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
  Jesus  showed them a child and said how you treat this innocent one in Jesus name, how you love him and are gentle, caring and kind and receive him, it  is as receiving Jesus. Jesus is with the innocent and the weak, the trusting children.   This can make us consider some things. How many leave their children in someone elses care while they work to achieve wealth and things? Are you are ignoring Jesus, are you are leaving Jesus behind? Jesus is saying, do not seek prominence, but seek me. Do good, love your children and your family. Relationships are more important then being first in the world.
Mat 19:13  Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
Mat 19:14  But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 19:15  And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
Not only is the Lord in little children, but he is in those who are most needy in the world. Do we see how we could neglect the needs of others when we seek personal wealth and prominence? What is our hearts fervent desire?
 Mat 25:34  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Mat 25:35  For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
Mat 25:36  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Mat 25:37  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
Mat 25:38  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Mat 25:39  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
Mat 25:40  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
.
I think we see the heart of God better now.
