When do we fast?

Mark 2:18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

Why don't you do our religious things? They were watching and accusing.

Mark 2:19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

In the presence of the Lord there is peace and every good thing. Joy is in his presence. Fasting is to deny the flesh and seek God in the Spirit. God was there in Jesus. No need to fast, but to listen and to ask.

Mark 2:20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

Not a fast as the Pharisees.

Mat 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Mat 6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
Mat 6:18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

Isa 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
Isa 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Isa 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isa 58:7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
Isa 58:8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thyrighteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Isa 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

Mark 2:13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

Again, teaching the word of God was first. He brought truth and grace.

Mark 2:14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

Levi, a publican and tax collector, was Matthew, who would give his gospel account to us later. He started out coming from the position of a despised tax collector. The collectors asked more than what the tax was, for their own wages. He arose and followed Jesus, as did the fishermen.

1 Cor 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
1 Cor 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
1 Cor 1:28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
1 Cor 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

Mark 2:15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

More followers from this group of people. We are not to despise a group of people, because of what they are. Jesus will make them new in him, if they respond to the gospel word. He loved them, so should we. Not the sins, but their soul that needs the Lord.

Mark 2:16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

I suppose that was a natural thing to say, for are we not to be separate?

2 Cor 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
2 Cor 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Separate from sin, but we are to witness to sinners. The Pharisees were not witnessing to Gentiles, they despised them as they despised tax collectors and sinners.

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Jesus knew hearts and he knew who would follow him. We do not know who will be saved, so we witness to everyone who will hear.

Mark 2:6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
Mark 2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

Good question; it is true that only God can forgive sins. For the skeptics, this is proof that Jesus was God's son who is one with the Father.

Mark 2:8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

Jesus always new their thoughts.

Mark 2:9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

Words are cheap, but to see someone healed, that is miraculous.

Mark 2:10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
Mark 2:11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

The miracle was the evidence that Jesus was God's son who also can forgive sins.

Mark 2:12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

God came down to man and they beheld his glory.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Living Word brought with him healing and the forgiveness of sins.

Mark 2:1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.

Mark 1:29 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

Mark 2:2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

It was always of the greatest importance, that Jesus preached the word of God. He is our example, preach the word with authority. Following the power of God's word came forth healings and miracles, for the kingdom of heaven was with Jesus.

Mark 2:3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
Mark 2:4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

Now these friends were determined to help their friend. Are we as determined to bring others to the Lord in prayer? Who fixed the roof? Perhaps the four who tore a hole in it?

Mark 2:5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

Wait? He was brought to Jesus for healing, yet truthfully being forgiven of sins is the greatest miracle; healing of the soul. Many have broken lives, so come to Jesus and he will forgive your sins. Life is new to you.

2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Cor 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2 Cor 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Follow Jesus, the Living Word

The words I have spoken to you are for your good and not your hurt yet if you reject me so be it for I am just a man but you said your a child of God it is him whom you should get to know and follow him and no other. You are told to be like Christ then look and see how often did Christ read scripture? You can read and see not very often and when he did he just said it is written without point out any place in scripture. He said he was taught by his father and we too are taught by the spirit so if you think I am like all others pointing continuous to the bible as if God were dead (?)and can't testify of himself than you are wrong. It is our job to seek out the truth using all things made available to us and when we know God then we know who is for God and who is not!  

  Jesus was our example and was the very Word of God. God's word is not dead, but living and eternal. Yes, he quoted from scriptures often. He taught us to overcome the devil by quoting scriptures as when he fasted in the desert for 40 days. We do not have to give chapter and verse, the word itself has the authority of God.  

Mat 4:4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.  

Mat 4:7  Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Mat 4:10  Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

He is the Word and he became a man, praying to the Father for his will. He taught us to follow the Father and he gave us more of the Father's word. They are one God.   To leave the scriptures is to go out on your own listening to a spirit, many spirits out their deceiving people, appearing as angels oif light as are his ministers, appearing to be of light. If we leave Jesus behind, we leave our salvationb. How are we to continue? In his word, for satan comes to steal, kill and destroy.  

Mat 11:10  For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.                                Mat 21:13  And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Mat 12:39  But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
Mat 12:40  For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Mat 12:41  The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Mat 12:42  The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

Mat 21:16  And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

Mat 26:24  The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

Mat 26:31  Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

Mark 7:6  He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Mark 9:12  And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.
Mark 9:13  But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

Mark 14:21  The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

Jesus spoke new commands...   Luke 24:46  And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

Luke 24:47  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Luke 24:48  And ye are witnesses of these things.
Luke 24:49  And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

John 6:32  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

John 12:14  And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
John 12:15  Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

Just as thepeople of God turned from him to worship other gods...so are people leaving God's word, Jesus and worshipping other spirits.  

Acts 7:39  To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
Acts 7:40  Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
Acts 7:41  And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
Acts 7:42  Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
Acts 7:43  Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
Acts 7:44  Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

They had the Ark of God with His presence, yet they turned to false gods and spirits. We must not do that. We have Jesus, His Spirit and the written word of God, We must never turn from these to other spirits...

Mark 1:38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.

By hearing the good news, many would be saved from sins punishment. He came to redeem, restore and reconcile people unto God.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Mark 1:39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

The synagogue or meeting place was the first place to preach the word of God and again he cast out many devils. Better to preach the word and cast out the devils then to have a devil friendly meeting place where the word is not preached. Jesus showed us what we are to do.

Mark 1:40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
Mark 1:41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

No one was supposed to touch a leper, because they were unclean and this would defile you. Jesus was more than a man, he was God in a man. His purity touched the leper and the leper was made clean. Leprosy is a type of sin, Jesus removes our sins and cleanses us.

Mark 1:42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
Mark 1:43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
Mark 1:44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
Mark 1:45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

The law required that a priest examines a leper who claims to be healed. Jesus wasn't looking for new people to follow him, already he had great crowds pressing in to him. For the leper to publicly point others to Jesus, would make moving around in the city difficult and would make the priests envious.

A word here to pastors and priests. Follow Jesus and do as he did, do not be a crowd pleaser, nor count numbers as success. Be faithful to preach the word, the Lord gives the increase. Jesus had to go back to where John had preached, because of the great crowds. He was in the desert, not a great building. It is the message, followed by miracles, that drew the people to him. The people wanted to see this man who did what no other had ever done; healed lepers, the blind, all manner of illness and cast out devils. This man spoke with authority.
